Still life painter Philip R. Jackson art on display at Begley Gallery Artist's "Seven Years in the Making" in Columbia until April 21, 2006 One photo accompanies this article By Emily Fryman frymane@lindsey.edu COLUMBIA, KY - Works by Philip R. Jackson are now on display at Lindsey Wilson College. The exhibit, "Seven Years in the Making," features still life paintings Jackson has created over the past seven years. Jackson is a professor of art at his alma mater, Columbus College of Art and Design. He earned a master of fine arts degree from Bowling Green State University. The show is on display from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. CDT in the Lucretia C. Begley Gallery in the W. W. Slider Humanities Center until April 21. A public reception and lecture by the artist will be Friday, April 21, at 2:30 p.m. CDT. Jackson paints still life objects, such as eggs, boxes and fruit, in a state of tension and balance that tricks the viewers eye. In his artist statement, Jackson writes that he enjoys presenting the ordinary in a new way. "The space, contrast, and imposition of each object create relationships that are either static or disparate," he writes. "My purpose is to question ones reality by separating the observed from the 'real'...leaving the viewer humorously puzzled." Jackson tries to challenge a perception However, Jackson says he is not trying to confuse the viewer, only challenge a perception. "Although questioning one's reality is amusing it is not my goal to fool the audience," he writes. "I am merely presenting an overlooked discovery." Jacksons work has been shown across the country. In 2001, he received a juried fellowship from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation. Recently, the Evansville Museum of Art and Science bought a piece for their permanent display.
