DW Swanner giving up on Alltel DSL; flying off, yonder, to Wildblue
Tired of waiting on phone company to act, technophile DW Swanner signing up with a wireless satellite, service; satellite guy will be in Green River area March 21, 2006
Other advice is "make a pest of yourself with Alltel" to get company to offer DSL in new territory
Vote in attached poll: Should broadband be an issue in 2006 Adair Elections
By Ed Waggener
For months DW Swanner of the Green River Lake area of Adair County, has been patiently prodding Alltel to make DSL available.
As many have learned, continued calling to the company occasionally gets results. But not for Swanner. So he investigated other avenues.
The path he has chosen is wireless, from Wildblue. He wrote, "I've done it. I've bit the bullet," and added, "I've ordered Wildblue. The satellite guy scheduled for March 21st. He's coming from Somerset, so if there is another local around here who wants to go Wildblue, he'll be in the area on that date."
At times dial-up service virtually worthless
Swanner says that for most of the time his dial-up service is virtually worthless for anything besdes email, it's so slow. His wife did take some internet college courses, but it was a painful process using Alltel phone lines.
Wildbllue is one of at least three wireless services here
Wildblue is one of at least three wireless broadband companies available in Adair County. CKIC, Central Kentucky Internet Company, provides wireless for a radius of approximately 4 miles around Columbia, KY. ColumbiaMagazine.com uses CKIC, which is exceptionally good most of the time.
On the Eastern Side of Adair County, Vortex Communications, a new company owned by David Godby and Tom Holt in Russell Springs, offers wireless now to a few clients along the Adair-Russell frontier. They investigating a serious move into Adair County, with wireless service which would blanket the county.
Both Vortex and CKIC offer the service antenna to antenna, while Wildblue's is beamed to and from a satellite system, in much the same way as satellite Tv works.
Wildblue up to 30 times rate of dial-up
Wildblue is a Colorado company which advertises availability virtually anywhere in the United States. The company offer high-speed Satellite Speed Service, and says that the service is up to 30 times faster than dial-up. The cost of the service starts at $49.95 per month.

Although Swanner had trouble getting DSL, others in the Cane Valley area have had better luck. They say that you just have to keep calling the company, and that the more frequently you call, the better chance one has to get results. The word is "You gotta make a pest of yourself," to get DSL in new territory from Alltel.
