ITS TIME: Volunteers called to action for developing Adair Citizen Corps

My biggest fear is the very real threat of a flu pandemic. Our Government is telling those of us in Public Safety that if the Bird Flu makes one more link to humans, that our medical resources can be quickly overwhelmed. In that case, it is the home and family which must stand on its own and care for each other.
- David Rowland, Public Safety Coordinator for the Lake Cumberland Area Development District.

Rowland told those in attendance at the recent Adair County Substance Abuse Coalition meeting that, The LCADD is coordinating this area for Homeland Security so that if any event overwhelms the agencies which normally respond to emergencies, the Citizen Corps volunteers are trained for action and ready to serve.

Hurricane Katrina gave everyone in the country a wakeup call, Rowland said, and its time to take seriously the advice of our countrys leaders who hope to see each home become prepared to live for three or four days without normal services.

In Adair County we have concern over tornadoes as in this approaching season, and always in this region we have reason to be concerned that we live in the New Madrid Fault zone. Additionally, Rowland says that everyone should be paying attention to the very real possibility of a flu pandemic which he feels is our most immediate threat.

If youre wondering how to completely prepare your home for an emergency, you may visit any of the websites below, check with the LCADD Public Safety Director, or view a video at the local Extension Office on Fairground Street.

Rowland also recommends reading the book, The Great Influenza, to see what was done right and what was done wrong in the catastrophic 1918 outbreak which is being compared to the possible Bird Flu Pandemic. He encourages anyone who can become a volunteer to call on the Local Emergency Management Director Greg Thomas at 270-378-1885.
