Former Mrs. Kentucky Kelly Brengelman to portray Ruth Hanly Booe at LWC Historial Monologue about Rebecca Ruth Candy founder, "Ruth Hanly Booe, Bourbon Ball Bell, 1891-1973," a Kentucky Chatuaqua Event, to be presented March 28 at Lindsey By Ellen Fryman Lindsey Wilson College writer frymane@lindsey.edu COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Kelly Brengelman, Mrs. Kentucky 2003, will present the historical monologue Ruth Hanly Booe, Bourbon Ball Belle, 1891-1973; A Kentucky Chautaugua Event- Bringing History to Life on March 28 at Lindsey Wilson College. The monologue -- which is part of the 2005-06 Lindsey Wilson Cultural Affair Series -- will be at 7 p.m. CST on Tuesday, March 28, in Lindsey Wilsons W. W. Slider Humanities Center Recital Hall. The performance is free and open to the public. Interprets life of early 1900s entrepreneur The March 28 performance is an interpretation of Ruth Hanly Booes life as an entrepreneur in the early 1900s in Kentucky. Booe was a substitute school teacher in the 1920s. Until she and Rebecca Gooch opened a candy business, called Rebecca Ruth Candies. Booe acquired partner's interest in Great Depression Gooch sold her half of the business to Booe when the Great Depression hit the Appalachian region. Booe made her Ruths Mint Kentucky Colonel during this time. Eleanor Hume Offutt suggested Booe mix candy and bourbon together. Booe perfected the recipe, and the candies sold well until World War II. Booe died in 1973, but business continues Booe passed away in 1973. Booes son John and grandson Charles run the business today. Brengelman won the Mrs. Kentucky title in 2003.
