Cyrus / Col. Wolford's dim view of Republicans

Col. Frank Wolford was known far and wide for his rough and tumble electioneering tactics.

Judge H.C. Baker wrote that "Wolford was full of resources on the stump, and was always composed and self poised.

If he lost his balance or felt 'shaky' no one could detect it. He could not be turned down upon a question of fact, and he never needed a fact to sustain his position."Goodness knows the Colonel sent enough veterans of the canvass -- Republicans, the lot of them -- back to their lairs to lick their wounds. Perhaps the best example of this is the oft-told tale of Wolford's impassioned speech about the hangings of Robert E. Lee & Jefferson Davis.

As it turns out, however, the only head actually in a noose was that of Wolford's debate opponent, Gen. Speed S. Fry. In a wonderfully moving tribute to Col. Wolford, "Savoyard" (Metcalfe County native Eugene E. Newman) wrote:
"I once asked Gen. Wolford his reasons for adopting such methods on the stump. He replied: 'The Republican party is founded on a lie; all the stock in trade Republicans have a is batch of lies. It is a good plan to fight the devil with fire if you can get together fire enough. That is my way of fighting the Republican party on the stump.'"
