VESTER: How it got its name; the Big Tree The example Grandpa used to try to keep me from smoking; the last postmaster at Garlin, KY One photo accompanies this story By Jason Harmon bjeharmon@hotmail.com I have heard about the Big Tree at Vester from my mom, dad and grandparents. Vester was named for Sylvester Burton The Vester Community is named in honor of one of my ancestors, Sylvester Burton 1871-1910. Vester was a merchant right in that very spot. He is buried out in that field behind a house trailer. Vester Burton was a brother to Murrell Burton's grandma, Nona Burton. Rac Burton operated store at Vester Rac Burton was James Denton Burton. He operated a store at Vester for many years. He descends from the "Cook" Burtons that I mentioned earlier. My grandpa worked for him at one time when he was young man. Grandpa used Rac Burton as example of smoking's problems Grandpa would always use Rac Burton as the story to get me to stop smoking cigarettes. He would say, "Jason, if you could have seen the shape them cigarettes got him into, then you would never smoke again." Rac's son was probably last Garlin postmaster Rac Burton's son was the Henry Thomas Burton. I think he was probably the last postmaster at Garlin. You can find mention of him and the store/post office in that book that Ernestine Bennett wrote about the Adair County Country Stores. Direct comments are not available.
