Bill Willis thinks Columbia was on an island, briefly, in 1961 Retired Frankfort Attorney Bill Willis believes he remembers the time Columbia was oompletely cut off by water. He was responding to an earlier story in whichGrover Gilpin was quoted, asking, "Does anyone remember when the town was completely isolated by water"?, as thinking the time was in the 1950s. Gilpin said his ambition today is to live to see that occur again. Willis thinks he remembers the year of the heavy flooding. It was in the 1960s, he believes. "I was in Lindsey in 1961," he recalls, "and I often went out to visit Pickett relatives past Milltown. But we were stopped at the Russell Creek Bridge on the Greensburg Road." He remembers trying to get out KY 61 North to Milltown Road, but the Russell Creek bridge north of Columbia was under water."The police stopped us and said we couldn't get through," Willis said. He believes that would have been the time the town on an island. This story was posted on 2006-02-20 15:29:23
