Family History Month proclaimed in Columbia

October was proclaimed Family History Month to "reaffirm our pride in our history and keep us mindful of the sacrifices of our forbearers."

Mayor Pamela Hoots met with Adair County Genealogy and History Center leaders - Lee Ann Jessee, Mike Watson, Annita Dial, and Anita Riddle - to sign the official document proclaiming the month for all the following reasons:

October Family History Month Proclamation

WHEREAS, an estimated 80 million Americans are believed to be actively involved in genealogical research in an effort to learn more about their ancestors both before and after immigrating to our shores;

WHEREAS, a growing number of institutions, libraries, and individuals in America and elsewhere are involved in collecting, preserving, and sharing genealogies, personal documents and memorabilia about their own ancestors, relatives or other individuals;

WHEREAS, genealogical information is not only important to present day researchers and family members, but it provides documentation for future generations to come;

WHEREAS, October was proclaimed Family History Month to "reaffirm our pride in our history and keep us mindful of the sacrifices of our forbearers."

WHEREAS, with the support and encouragement of the Adair County Genealogical Society, representing genealogists throughout the county, I do therefore, proclaim the month of October 2024, as Family History Month in Columbia and Adair County, Kentucky.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Columbia, Kentucky, does hereby promote and support October, 2024, as Family History Month. s/ Mayor Pamela Hoots

October proclaimed Family History Month

The Adair County Genealogy and History Center beside the Library on Greensburg Street is among a growing number of institutions, libraries, and individuals in America involved in collecting information about family heritage.

Work is being done for preserving, and sharing genealogies, personal documents and memorabilia about individual's own ancestors, relatives or others. Stop by the Center anytime to see if your family has a binder or files in the many cabinets labeled with local names - or if you need to add yours to the growing collections.
