In the Adair County Board of Education meeting Thursday, February 16, 2006, the board voted unanimously to close a loophole in the schools' policy on pupil moves.

Parents of Colonel William Casey, John Adair, and Adair County Middle Schools can no longer enroll their children at Sparksville, Shepherd, or Knifley schools without a valid reason.

The change was made to keep parents of students in the town schools from moving their children to county schools in order to have priority for enrollment at the new Adair County Elementary School. County school students have first priority on the new school.

Though it wasn't mentioned at the board meeting, it had been widely rumored that wealthier parents would use the previous regulations to transfer their children to the county schools toward the end of the term so that their children would be enrolled in the new school in August 2006.The loophole was closed with last night's action.

Schools now have single provider for long distance

Superintendent Darrell Treece said that that the entire school system now shares the same long distance service. BellSouth will provide long distance 3.56 per minute.

Adair County Elementary School construction on schedule

Constuction of the new elementary school is quickening, Supt. Treece said. "On Monday, when school's were closed because of snow, 60 people were on the job." he said. "On some days there are over 80."

"It's beginning to look like a school building," Treece said.

The school is scheduled to open in August, 2006.

Change order will save $12,500

Most construction change orders mean added costs. But a change order on the construction of the new school from Mack Davis Construction which meant a savings to the schools of $12,500. As expected, it was approved.

Wiring for ACTIV boards approved

The board approved an wiring the new elementary school for ACTIV or "White" boards at an additional cost of $125 per room, at an approximate additional cost of $3,750 for the 30 rooms involved. The board will make a decision later in the spring to install the boards, dependent on availability of funds. ACTIV boards are state-of-the-art computer teaching aids.
