Cyrus / Community newsletters, Feb. 13, 1946

Those of us who are chronologically enhanced still sorely miss the community newsletters that for so many years formed the backbone of the local papers. Those were the days when a trip to town or a stay in the hospital, a visit from a neighbor, the purchase or passing of a farm animal, and a country minister fulfilling (or missing) his regular Sunday appointment constituted newsworthy events of the first order.

These letters had avid readership from Chance to Casey's Creek, from Gentry's Mill to Gradyville and created a county-wide sense of community in an era when life was simpler and the minutiae of everyday life were events to be savored.

The following "sampler" comes from community newsletters (and a couple of school reports) published in the Adair County News exactly sixty years ago today -- February 13, 1946.

Grassy Springs School Notes (submitted by Feyline B. Ballou, teacher):
  • Our school here closed February 1.
  • Billy Stephens, the only member of the 8th grade, did satisfactory work and was granted a diploma on the last day of school. We hope Billy can attend high school this fall. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Willie Stephens.
Ella:
  • Mr. and Mrs. S.S. Shepherd, of this place, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Friday, February 1. They are the parents of 8 children, 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. We wish them many more happy years together. [Mr. Shepherd died in November, 1949.--Cyrus.]
  • Mr. Herbert McGaha had the misfortune of losing a cow.
  • Mr. Hollis Morrison has purchased a fine hog from Charlie Combine, of Eunice.
  • Mr. Walker Johnson is putting in a blacksmith shop here.
Sparksville:

  • Mr. and Mrs. Bill Polston have moved to Mr. Waylon Strange's place.
  • Johnnie, the little son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Stotts, has been confined to his room with measles.
  • Mr. Joe Baker is on the sick list at this time.
Gradyville (submitted by Mrs. W.S. Baker):
  • Rev. McKinley Peace, Magnolia, pastor of the Baptist Church at this place, filled his regular appointment here last Sunday, February 3.
  • Miss Cladistine Richard, who was operated upon for appendicitis at Glasgow Hospital recently, has returned home much improved. (In this modern era of "drive-thru" surgery, it's nearly impossible to believe that in years past, a procedure as simple as an appendectomy frequently resulted in a hospital stay of a week or more.--Cyrus.)
  • Mr. U.C. Janes bought a piece of land lying on the waters of Big Creek one day last week from J.L. Tarter. This is known as the Strong Hill lot.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Walker, of Columbia, visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Walker, and family last Sunday.
  • Aunt Frances Richard...died a few weeks ago from a complication of diseases...Aunt Frances was a kind, good woman and had lived to a ripe old age, being 84 years old. She was buried at Tarter's Graveyard. Rev. Titus Sneed gave a fine talk.
Basil:
  • Our school, taught by Wallace Coomer, was out Friday. Five pupils came every day. Some finished eighth grade.
  • C.P. Coomer and son, Jerome, bought a pair of mules last week from the Keltner Brothers.
  • Miss Helen Moss visited her sister, Mrs. Twyman Stevens, of Columbia, last week.
Purdy:
  • Mrs. Lucien Burton remains about the same.
  • Mrs. Alva Holt was calling on Elnora Burton Thursday.
  • Mr. Richard Burton is some better at this writing.
  • Mr. Carl Burton has moved into his new store building.
  • Mrs. Edith Holt was in Columbia Saturday on business.
Gadberry:
  • Our community was saddened on Saturday, January 19, when our neighbor and friend, Mrs. Aquilla Darnell, passed out of this life into the great beyond.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Arnon Loy, of Fairplay, are the proud parents of a girl born January 25.
  • Mr. Lynn Chewning spent a few days last week with his grandmother, Mrs. Mary Gadberry.
Miller Field:
  • Mrs. Florence Pike is real sick at this time. Dr. Bolin was called to see her.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Goodin are the proud parents of a baby girl named Betty Sue.
  • Mr. Rollin Jones bought a nice pair of mules and a cow from Mr. J.L. Beard, of Eunice, one day last week.
  • Mr. Joseph Foley and family have moved to their new home that he recently bought from Ross Hubbard on Sulphur Creek.
Cane Valley School Eighth Month Honor Roll (submitted by Beulah Bennett, teacher):
  • First grade--Lois Faye Jones.
  • Second grade--Sammie Moss, Elizabeth Hitch.
  • Third grade--Tommie Moss.
  • Fourth grade--Wayne Smith, Willard Smith.
  • Fifth grade--Judy Ann Hancock.
  • Sixth Grade--Donald Keene, Rosa Eastridge, Helen Hancock.
  • Eighth grade--Rose Mary Hancock, Sarah Hancock, Virginia Thompson.
