COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson College students and Adair County residents will get more than candy and cards this Valentines Day.

On February 14, Lindsey Wilson will host a grand opening of The Catherine Wilson Center. First Lady Elise Luckey and Glenda Woods, director of the Kentucky Commission on Women, will speak at the opening, which begins at 1 p.m. CT.

The public is welcome to attend the event. The Catherine Wilson Center is located on Lindsey Wilson Hill coming from Fairgrounds Street.

Center promotes gender equality

The Catherine Wilson Center offers educational and social programs for female and male college students and community members. The center promotes gender equality by identifying and breaking down obstacles that women face in the community.

It is important that people become aware of gender bias so they can change it for the good of the community, said Wendy Benningfield, assistant professor of history and director of The Catherine Wilson Center.

The center provides lectures from community leaders, Bible studies, domestic violence and sexual assault programs, volunteer opportunities, luncheons, individual counseling, social gatherings and discussion sessions.

Center will encourage women and men to work together to build a strong Adair County

The center will encourage women and men to work together to build a strong Adair County, Benningfield said. The center is inclusive; we want men and women to get involved. Specifically, if women dont have equality in the community, government, church or home, they cannot work with men to improve their neighborhood.

Benningfield said she looks forward to working with the Kentucky Commission on Women.

The Kentucky Commission on Women promotes the following pillars: education, equity, health, economic sufficiency and leadership, Benningfield said. The Catherine Wilson Center upholds those same values. Working with organizations that have the same goals allows Adair County to take the lead in improving the lives of Kentuckians, she said.
