''Kentucky Winter Wonderland'' on new Adair Countians' website Mary Phelps, a Russell Countian by way of Boston and Florida, and husband Jay Hathaway are adding new impetus to the growing Adair County Horse Industry with development on Bird Road, Sparksville, Adair County, KY By Ed Waggener ed@columbiamagazine.com Phelps/Hathaway Enterprises Inc are leaders worldwide in the horse industry and have featured a beautiful story on the company's move into Adair County. The current story is "Kentucky Winter Wonderland" which has many great snow pictures of the farm on Bird Road, Sparksville, KY, where Mary Phelps and, and husband, Jay Hathaway, are developing their new home and horse-related businesses. The story features poetic descriptions of life on Rock Lick Creek and especially perceptive look, for winter lovers, of the beauty of Adair County when the barren trees open up the vistas. The story includes mention of a lot of local people and places, including Garon Parris and Jeffries, builders John and Luke Brinkman, Tater Cave, and Flatwoods Grocery and Consignments, where Mary and Jay are members in regular attendance. An Esto Road, Russell County heritage Mary Phelps has spent the last 15 years in Florida, but she's almost a Russell Countian. She grew up in Boston, where her late father, M.D. Phelps, M.D., practiced at the world-renown Lahey Clinic. On retirement, Dr. Phelps returned to Russell County, to the Esto Road area, and built his retirement home, at Phelps Acres near the Phelps Historic home est. 1789, currently owned by Mary's sister Nancy Phelps owner of Esto Arts. Her Grandfather Marcus Phelps owned the first car dealership in Russell Springs, and was in the KY House of Representatives in the 1940's. Irene Phelps still lives in Russell County home off Esto RD He continued to practice medicine at the hospital in Russell Springs and at a primary care in Edmonton, KY. His widow, Irene Phelps still lives in the Russell County home off Esto Road. Jay Hathaway is at home in the Adair County winters. He is a retired police officer from Wisconsin, and had a very exciting career in Florida as a Sergeant at the Volusia County jail when he was one of the officers assigned to watch over Ted Bundy and Aileen Wornos. Huge following in the equine industry Mary Phelps and JJ. Hathaway have a huge following in the equine industry. They have the leading horse websites HorsesDaily.com and at DressageDaily.com. In addition, Mary Phelps is an international horse photographer and is an agent for horse insurance with Markel Corp, of Richmond, Virginia. "I am very fortunate to work for a company that not only allows me to 'do my thing' but supports us in our efforts." Phelps said of Markel. She's excited about the horse industry in Adair County, and especially Adair County's close proximity to the Kentucky Horse Park, where the 2010 World Equestrian Games will come. She couldn't have been more excited when Lexington was chosen for the games than had she won a Powerball lottery for hundreds of millions of dollars. She's already working on contracts for her horse photography agency. Hearts are in Kentucky "We are back in Florida now, working hard to pay for all of this! But our hearts are in Kentucky, so much so, we are seriously considering putting our Florida home on the market!", she says. Direct comments are not available.
