Fryman News Writer, Lindsey Wilson College frymane@lindsey.edu Ann Braden photo accompanies this article Legendary Kentucky civil rights activist,journalist and author Anne Braden was to have given a talk on Thursday,February 9, at Lindsey Wilson College. However, the event has been cancelled. Braden's talk was to have been titled "How the Struggle for Civil Rights Shapedthe 20th Century: How It Remains the Unfinished Business of the21st." Part of Black History Month celebration at Lindsey Wilson Braden's lecture, which is free and open to the public, was to have been part ofthe 2005-06 Lindsey Wilson Cultural Affair Series. Braden, a Louisville, Ky., native, attracted national attention whenshe and her husband, Carl, bought a house in a white neighborhood inLouisville in 1954 and then sold it to an African-American couple. Speaker wrote "The Wall Between" Braden recorded the events of racism that followed, such as crossburnings and bombings of the house, in her book "The Wall Between."The book earned runner-up in the National Book award in 1958. Before becoming involved in civil rights, Braden spent her earlyyears as a courtroom reporter in Alabama before reporting for thelate Louisville Times. Braden also worked for the groundbreaking Southern ConferenceEducational Fund, which helped shape the Civil Rights movement.Braden edited the SCEF publication The Southern Patriot. Braden's involved in the Civil Rights era is portrayed in CatherineFosl's book, "Subversive Southerner: Anne Braden and the Strugglefor Racial Justice in the Cold War South."
