Lindsey Wilson College to celebrate Black History Month Special events, Ann Braden visit will highlight events By Emily Fryman frymane@lindsey.edu News Writer, Lindsey Wilson College COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson College will celebrate Black History Month with several special events over the next four weeks. Lindsey Wilson prides itself on the diversity of the campus and its students, said Student Activities Director Christina Graves. During Black History Month, students will have the chance to attend events from lectures to gospel concerts. The LWC Cultural Affairs Committee is sponsoring a guest speaker about on the Civil Rights movement, according to Phil Hanna, cultural affairs committee chairman and director of library services. *Ann Braden to speak about Civil Rights Movement This month we have asked Ann Braden of Louisville to speak about the Civil Rights movement and her affiliation with it, Hanna said. She will be speaking on how the struggle for civil rights shaped the 20th century and that it is still unfinished business. I believe its important for students to experience the variety of people who have fought for civil rights -- it's a piece of living history. Black history has been recognized annually in American since 1926. Established by Kentucky native and history scholar Carter G. Woodson as Negro History Week, the purpose of the initiative was to bring national attention to the accomplishments of black Americans. Woodson chose the second week of February for Negro History Week because it marks the birthdays of two men who greatly affected American blacks -- Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. The week was later expanded into a monthlong celebration in order to recognize several other important leaders and events. Lindsey Wilson's schedule for Black History Month: Black Student Union Supper Club: Featuring guest Speaker Wanda Washington of Campbellsville, Ky, invitation only; 5:30 p.m. CST Tuesday, February 21, in Roberta D. Cranmer Dining and Conference Center. Black Student Union Valentines Day Kisses Fundraiser: Participants can buy Hershey kisses for 10 cents, which will be hand-delivered on Valentines Day; kisses will be on sale during lunch and dinner from Feb. 3-10 in Roberta D. Cranmer Dining and Conference Center. Fifth-Annual Lindsey Wilson Black Student Union Gospel Explosion: 6:30 p.m. CST Friday, Feb. 24, in Slider Recital Hall. Dance Marathon Raffle and Fundraiser: Students will dance for six hours while getting sponsors to raise money for the Black Student Union. Time and date are TBA. For more information about Black History Month celebrations at Lindsey Wilson, contact Graves at info@linsey.edu or at (270) 384-8033. *Ann Braden:This note was received December 6, 2007: "Unfortunately Anne Braden never made it to Lindsey. Her health had been failing and she very reluctantly had to cancel her visit to Lindsey. A friend of hers, actually, her biographer, called me to say that she just was not well enough to make the trip. "Just a few weeks after her scheduled visit I learned that Anne Braden had passed away after a brief hospitalization. "After I learned of her passing, I spoke to the young woman, a student at the college, who was to introduce her at the college and she told me with great enthusiasism that she had chanced to meet Anne at a social justice event in Louisville and she made the Lindsey connection to her." The note was signed, "Phil Hanna." Phil Hanna is the Director of the Library at Lindsey Wilson College. Direct comments are not available.
