Smith and Watts accepted to Governor's Scholars Program

Adair County High School juniors Aaron Smith and Bailey Watts have been accepted to the Kentucky Governor's Scholars Program for summer 2024.

GSP is a five-week summer residential program for outstanding high school students in Kentucky between their Junior and Senior years. In order to participate in the program, students must be nominated by their high schools and then compete on a state-wide level. The application process is similar to that of prestigious colleges and universities. The students must write lengthy applications that consist of all their academic, athletic, and community projects they have participated in since becoming a high school student.

Mrs. Candice Flatt, the Gifted Coordinator for the Adair County School district, teaches these students during Tribe Time at the highschool, and both are in her Kentucky United Nations Assembly class.

Mrs. Flatt says, "Bailey Watts and Aaron Smith are two amazing, intelligent, and hard-working students who compete at the state level in the Kentucky United Nations Assembly competition in Louisville, KY, each year. Aaron is on the debate team and has been extremely successful writing resolutions for our team. Bailey Watts was elected as the International Court of Justice President for the 2024-2025 school year. Both students excel in world politics and social economics. I am so pleased to have them in my program, and they are very deserving of the Governor's Scholars award. I know there are better things yet to come for these outstanding students."

Bailey Watts is the daughter of Bridgette and Ben Watts of Breeding. "I am extremely grateful to have the opportunity to attend the Governor's Scholars Program," says Bailey. "I was allowed to put a preference for what I would want to study for those five weeks on my application, and my choices were healthcare industry, astronomy, and physical science. I will know what campus and focus area I am assigned to in late May. As for college, I plan to attend Vanderbilt University on a pre-med track. I will be applying this fall for early decision. After college, I plan to go to medical school and become a reconstructive surgeon."

Aaron Smith is the son of Patrick and Angelia Smith of Columbia. Aaron says, "I'm honored that I was one of the ones chosen to attend the 2024 Governor's Scholar Program. During the program, I chose one of the three fields to study business, engineering, or astronomy. I'm excited to see what learning opportunities and memories await me at GSP. This program will give me a small glimpse of what campus life will look like whenever I go to college. For college, I plan on studying to get my Master of Business Administration degree at Northwestern University and then using my degree go into the finance industry."

Governor's Scholars can attend one of three campuses this year: Centre College, Murray State University, or Morehead State University. Bailey and Aaron will know find out which of the GSP campuses they will attend, and what focus area they were assigned, some time in late May.
