Dr. Charles W. Smith to speak at Lindsey Wilson on Wednesday

Lindsey Wilson College will welcome retired Western Kentucky University faculty and science librarian Dr. Charles W. Smith to campus on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 for a public talk.

Smith is one of the leading scholars on scientist Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913), the co-originator of the theory of natural selection. Wallace developed his theory independently of Charles Darwin, the scientist most commonly known as the architect of the theory of evolution by natural selection.

The talk will begin at 4:30pmCT in Room 204 of the Dr. Robert & Carol Goodin Nursing & Counseling Center at Lindsey Wilson College.

Smith's talk will provide a crash course introduction to Wallace, focusing partly on comparisons between Wallace and Darwin who differed both in their style of science and evolutionary biology interpretation. Smith will explain why Wallace is still relevant and serves as a model for reasoned thinking and principled living.

"We are excited to open Dr. Smith's talk to everyone," said LWC Assistant Professor of Biology Michael Bosela. "In addition to Dr. Smith's unique area of specialization, he will also talk about his own career path which combines elements of science and the humanities for the benefit of students with similar interests who are thinking about the next steps after college. He's an interesting guy and his experiences will interest not just the math and science students and faculty, but everyone."

Smith's public talk is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact Dr. Michael Bosela at boselam@lindsey.edu.
