The Wid Watch is over. Squire Harris will seek re-election.

It took two checks with Adair County Court Clerk Ann Melton this morning to fully confirm that the filing was complete and which office--County Judge or District 2 Magistrate--the veteran political figure would seek.

The report on the first call was that all the blanks were filled in and everything was signed except for Wid's second signer. The second call confirmed that the candidate filing was signed, sealed, and delivered.

Second District Magistrate, Senior Magistrate, and current Adair County Judge Pro-Tem William "Wid" Harris completed filing this morning, before 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 24, 2006.

The filing came one week, eight-and-one-half hours before the filing deadline, at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 31, 2006.

Harris second person to file today

Harris was the second person to file today. Al Schubert filed for Constable, also as a Democrat, and, coincidentally, also in the Second District. Schubert is the incumbent.

Harris had considered run for county judgeship

Squire Harris had said he was leaning to running for re-election as Magisrate for some days now, but had not completely ruled out the County Judge's Race. Though taking a longer time to reach a decision, he followed the same path as first term Fourth District Magistrate J.M. Shelley. Shelley briefly considered running for County Judge, but decided fairly soon after filing opened to run to retain his seat.

The Democrats now have Magisterial Candidates in Six Districts, including the five they now hold, plus two candidates in District 5, where a total of six candidates are running.

Democrats have no candidates in District 1, now held by Roger Stephens, who is seeking re-election. Stephens' primary opponent is Donnie Gene Curry.

Republicans also have Magisterial Candidates in Six Districts, including both districts they now hold, District 1 and 5. The one district in which the Republicans have not filed is District 6, now held by Squire Joe Rogers, who is the only candidate to have filed, to date, and is the only Magistrate with neither primary nor Republican opposition at this time.

Democrats closer in number of offices sought

With the filings today, Democrats now have 14 candidates for 13 county offices, closing the gap on offices contested with the Republicans, who now have 35 candidates filed, but only for 17 offices.

Constable Schubert was the first Democrat to file for a Constable Post. There are now seven candidates for constable in six districts. There is no Constable candidate from either party in District 7 at this time.

Republicans have six candidates for constable in five districts. There is a primary between William Trout and Steve Foster in District 1.

Six of seven constables are Republicans; five are also Rescue Squad Members

Five of the seven Constable candidates are members of the Adair County Rescue Squad: Stephen Austin Foster, District 1; Bruce Allen Spoon, District 3; Tony Grider, Distrct 4; Jason Wooten, Distict 5; and Jason Rector, District 6, are all members of the squad, and all are Republicans. Democrat Al Schubert, District 2, and Republican Bill Troutwine, District 1, are not.
