Tula Daniel Matthews Hoover Peterson, age 102, (1921-2024) Tula Daniel Matthews Hoover Peterson, 102, of Campbellsville, Ky passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 6, 2024. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents; two sisters: Clara Conover (Columbia) and Mildred White (Campbellsville); and four brothers: Jessie Matthews, Carroll Matthews, Tom Matthews (Campbellsville), and Richard (Dick) Matthews. Born on March 25, 1921, to the late Rev. RV Matthews and Anna Belle Clark Matthews, Tula's early childhood changed when her father felt the call to the ministry and started his work as a Methodist minister. This journey involved moving around western Kentucky until her beloved father's death after her graduation from Hiseville High School. Her strong mother then moved the family of nine children to Columbia, KY to be near Lindsey Wilson College to avail her children the opportunity to attend college. Tula then married Gene Hoover and they had a son, Hal (deceased-2001). Their family moved to Arlington, TX for Gene's work and Tula found a career in the Montgomery Ward retail sales in Dallas. There she watched the development of the new Dallas Cowboys professional football team in 1960, leading to her being a lifelong die-hard Cowboys fan. After Gene's death, Tula visited her sisters in Kentucky and reconnected with her high school sweetheart at Hiseville High School, Herbert (Pete) Peterson. They were soon married, and Tula returned to live in Glasgow, Ky until Pete's death. She then moved to Campbellsville to be closer to family. After moving here, she also developed a great love of University of Kentucky sports and was a dedicated fan of Wildcat football and basketball. Tula was involved with the United Methodist Church in Glasgow and enjoyed her time in the church choir and the handbell choir. In Campbellsville, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed quilting, cross stitch, and counted cross stitch. She was dedicated to Lindsey Wilson College and donated to the development of the Rev. RV and Anna Belle Matthews Scholarship Fund for ministerial students and funded the Matthews Student Prayer Room for students to have a space on campus for quite time and reflection. She received an Honorary Alumna Award from LWC in 2012. She is survived by two sisters: Christine Greenman of Muncie, Indiana, and Virginia Ward (Bill) of Madison, Indiana. She is also survived by 13 nieces and nephews. The family would like to show their appreciation to Judy Keltner for her outstanding support as Tula's companion for 14 years. They also want to recognize the exceptional care she received from the staff at Blue Grass Way where she lived her last 12 years. Visitation will be from 10 - 1pmET Sunday, March 10, 2024 at Parrott & Ramsey Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Hiseville Cemetery next to her beloved son, Hal, on Sunday, March 10, 2024. In her honor, please consider donations of Gideon Bibles or to the Rev. RV and Anna Belle Matthews Scholarship Fund at Lindsey Wilson College. This story was posted on 2024-03-08 15:33:34
