The criteria for filling the new Adair County Elementary, for shuffling students from one elementary school to another, and the question of whether or not to solve the problem by geography was decided last night. In the end, criteria proposed by Superintendent Darrell Treece was adopted.

The decision was made in the board's special regular January, 19, 2006 meeting, which was special because it was held in the John Adair Intermediate School auditorium instead of the board conference room.

Most controversial agenda item was the immediately before adjournment

It was evident from the size of the 50-plus audience, and the fact that hardly anyone left during the two hour session until the topic was taken up, that the Attendance Assignments topic lived up to what Mr. Treece called "the most important item on the agenda."

The vote to adopt Mr. Treece's plan was 3-1, with Board Member Marsha Walker voting no. Member Chris Watts was not present. Mr. Treece said that Mr. Watts was having health problems, and asked for thoughts to be with him.

Mrs. Walker favored further discussions between the board and the school administrators involved. The administrators are Jane Branham of John Adair Intermediate School, Patty Jones of Colonel William Casey, Donald McKinney of Adair Middle School,Robbie Harmon of Knifley Garde Center, Alma Irvin Rich, of Shepherd Elementary School, and Tamara Smith of Sparksville Elementary School. Mrs. Walker also wanted geographic districts to be considered.

Mrs. Walker appeared more sympathetic to a plan to determine student school assignments by geographic district.

The three other members present, Chairman Mike Harris, Vice Chairman Greg Willis, and Member Floyd Burton, agreed with Mr. Treece. Mr. Treece said that earlier involvement with an independent school district bordering a county school district. He said that he was DPP (Director of Pupil Personnel) as well as Assistant Superintendent at the independent school district. "I can tell you that there's no end to problems. Believe it or not, a lot of parents will lie to you about where their kids live."

Mr. Treece stressed that the board had wanted to have all children in the county in the same grade to attend the same school.

In answer to Mrs. Walker's suggestion to utilize more of the space in the building constructed in 1954 and first used as Adair County High School and is now the Adair County Middle School, Mr. Treece said that a number of plans had been studied, but none of the ideas could produce a suitable plan. Basically, this is because the schools are built and outfitted to the needs of specific age levels.

In the end, Mr. Treece's plan was adopted, as indicated below.
