State of Columbia report - city is growing again

Columbia Mayor Pamela Hoots presented the state of the city report at the February Columbia Adair Chamber of Commerce meeting and luncheon provided by Southern Nest Realty.

She shared statistics from the Kentucky League of Cities and the Lake Cumberland Area Development District which detail how well Columbia is doing in areas from family income to economic growth. She listed details in each of the following areas which the Mayor and City Hall staff manage: General operation of city government, Business licenses/occupational, Planning and Zoning, Ordinances, Budgeting, Taxes, Gas payments and ABC Enforcement.


COLUMBIA POLICE DEPARTMENT: Two officers on duty/24 hours a day, We have three of the four SRO officers in the local school system. The city sponsors and funds the DARE Program in the school system, There are three K-9 units (Matt, Cally, and Rowdy) One of those is assigned to school system, Community policing - Drug trailer/vehicle received from USDA Community Facilities Grant, Body cameras (grant), computers for vehicles (grant) and Member of High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force.

GAS DEPARTMENT: Sixty new services last three years. Expansions to Churchill Estates, Green Hills, E80 Drive, Cane Valley, North 61. Coming soon: Hudson Street, Bypass, and Greensburg road

STREET DEPARTMENT: Columbia Street Department - Maintenance of city streets, Road signs, Public square, Right of ways, Street lights, Sidewalks -- Do you know they handle around 900 loads of brush in a year?

PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT - Maintenance upkeep of city parks, Veterans memorial park, Little league park, Trabue Russell house, City park (fairground street), Garbage/mowing

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES: Flowers on the square (Mary Anne Loy), Paint The Town, Truck It Up, Veterans banners (Ronnie Holt), Art show/teas Trabue Russell House (Mary Ann Loy), Pick It Up, Christmas In The Park, Trail Town, Free Little Library, Back To School (Thank you to Lance Burton).

NEW & EXPANDED BUSINESSES: Hooligan Burger, Happy Hawg, Old Columbia, Zaxby's, The Local Dwelling Company, AT&T, Little Caesar's, El Maguey, Gigi's Ice Cream and BYO coming soon. All these make for around 150 new jobs in Columbia.

GRANTS APPROVED that have made a difference: Grant for maintenance building, Grant for economic development building, Various grants for police equipment, Splash Pad, DARE, Drug vehicle/trailer for training, Cameras for police, Playground equipment, Grant for economic development/gas.

GRANTS PENDING: Grant for gas replacement lines $6 million, Park improvement $1.5 million, Grant for police equipment, ARC grant for gas line extensions and economic development, EV (electrical vehicle) Stations. MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL SERVING: Robert Flowers, Mark Harris, Rhonda Loy, Sharon Payne, Hannah Peck and Dr. Ronald Rogers.

Officer Wilson joins Columbia Police Department

Pictured between Officer Joey Keith, at right, and, Columbia Police Chief Charles Greer, at left, is the newest member of the CPD, Officer Jay Wilson. He was sworn in recently by Mayor Hoots who welcomed the Adair County High School graduate with over a decade of law enforcement experience into the department.
