Election 2006 watchers are keeping a close eye on Adair County Court Clerk Ann Melton's office today.

Adair County Judge Pro Tem and Senior Magistrate on Fiscal Court Wid Harris has said he plans to file today for one of two offices:
  1. For the Democratic nomination for Adair County Judge Executive, as a primary opponent of magisterial colleague Terry Farris, who is leaving the Seventh District Magisterial post to run for County Judge.

  2. For re-election to the post he's held so long and from which he's wielded what most consider to be more influence than any other magistrate: Mr. Harris is now District 2 Magistrate, which includes East Columbia and Ozark precincts, on Fiscal Court.
While the decision is expected today, Magistrate Harris may yet delay. Friends have indicated it has been a very, very tough decision for him to make.

The latest registration figures we have, from mid-December are that the registration in the District is 1,019 Republicans to 546 Democrats, but always in the past, this has not affected his ability to win handsome majorities.

Two Republicans have filed seeking their party's nomination for the District 2 Magisterial position. They are Ted Turner and Joe Kimbler. Kimbler was the partiy's nominee in 2002.

Harris' decision is considered likely to affect other potential Democratic Primary candidates for Adair County Judge executive.Others who have been mentioned as possible primary opponents for Terry Farris are two-time nominee Carl Arnold and former Judge Richard Lee Walker.

Deadline now only two weeks away

The deadline for filing for party nominations county offices, January 31, 2006, is now only two weeks away. Candidates for city offices, school board, and the Soil Conservation District board can file as late as August, 2006.

Democrats now have primary choice to face Representative Whitfield

A second candidate has filed for the Democratic nomination for 1st District U.S. Representative with Secretary of State Trey Grayson's office. He is Jim Bloink, 194 New Salem Church Road, Scottsville, KY. He is challenging former lst District Congressman Tom Barlow, 165 Idlewild Drive, Paducah, KY. The incumbent, former Democrat-turned-Republican Ed Whitfield, 108 Alumni Drive, Hopkinsville, KY, is unopposed at present.

Rep. Russ Mobley still has free ride

So far, Rep. Russ Mobley appears to have a free ride. Rep. Mobley has already filed from re-election to represent Adair and Taylor Counties in the Kentucky House of Representatives.

Judge Weddle files; as yet has no opponent

Judge James G. Weddle, P.O. Box 307, 29th Judicial District incumbent, has filed with the Secretary of State for re-election. At present, he is unopposed.

There have been no more filings in the 29th Judicial District race for District Judge. Two Columbia attorneys, Michael Loy and Judy D. Vance, remain the only two entrants as of January 16, 2006.At present, no one has filed for the Commonwealth Attorney for the 29th Judicial District.
