Ruth Hopkins, 87, Russell County, KY (1936-2024)

Ruth Joan Hopkins, of Russell Springs, passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at the Jean Waddle Care Center of Somerset. She was 87 years of age.

She was an accomplished bowler, finishing 3rd in a professional bowling tournament in Reno, Nevada. She loved music of all kinds and enjoyed singing karaoke. She was a loving mother and grandmother.


Ms. Ruth was born September 23, 1936, in the Salem Community, daughter of the late Lewis and Alpha Smith Hammond. She was a former employee of Fruit of the Loom, of Jamestown.

She is survived by her son, R. L. (and Sherry) Luttrell, of Columbia; her daughters, Joan George and Jean Waddell, both of Russell Springs; her sister, Betty Stephens; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Along with her parents, Ms. Ruth is preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Hopkins; her twin sister, Ruby Cooper; and her two brothers, Robert Hammond and Joseph Hammond.

Funeral services are 2pmCT Saturday, January 27, 2024, at Bernard Funeral Home, with Bro. Glen Richardson officiating. Special music will be provided by Bro. Glen and Sister Willadean Richardson. Interment will follow in Salem Cemetery. Pallbearers are Jamie Rogers, Jeremy Mann, Kendrick Whelan, John Cooper, Rodney Hart and Jim Cain.
