Betty Gail Downey, 78, Russell County, KY (1945-2024)

Betty Gail Downey, of Russell Springs, passed from this life on Friday, January 19, 2024, at Russell County Hospital. She was 78 years of age.

She gave most of her adult life to raising kids. She loved being with her children and grandchildren and was always up for family get-togethers. She played the piano, as well as guitar and bass. She loved music of all kinds and enjoyed singing.


She was born in Louisville, February 25, 1945, daughter of the late Benjamin and Cora Elsie Stephens Downey. She was a member of the West 80 Church of God and former long-time employee of Fruit of the Loom, of Jamestown.

She is survived by her children, Cody Downey, Christian Downey, Gina (and Terry) McQueary, LaTisha (and John) Montgomery, Kisha (and Jeremy) Darnell, Courtney Downey, Brooklyn Downey, Emiliee Downey, Kylie Miller, Hailey Smith, Debbie Higginbotham and Carlie Montgomery. She is also survived by her brother, Carl Downey; her sisters, Jenny Fillippinie, Velma Hill, Helen Napier, Della Ray Burns, Barbara Russell, Marsha Bell; eleven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Along with her parents, Betty is preceded in death by her son, Donnie Higginbotham, her brother, Lincoln Holder; her sisters, Leecie Holder and Fay Hoover; and her granddaughter, Mia Darnell.

Funeral services are 1pmCT Monday, January 22, 2024, at Bernard Funeral Home, with Bro. Scott Proctor officiating. Burial will follow in Bernard Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be held after 10 until time for services.
