Weather System can cause hazardous driving

From the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (Jan. 11, 2024) - A multiple-phase weather system is expected to move through the the state beginning overnight tonight. Rain with strong winds is expected overnight with single-digit temperatures with possible snow Sunday and Monday. The National Weather Service Louisville (NWS) has issued a Wind Advisory predicting strong winds over 50 mph beginning overnight. Heavy rain is also expected throughout the day on Friday.

The strong winds Friday could cause issues for vehicles, particularly large vehicles, along with wet travel conditions. Traffic signals could also be impacted, and motorists should use caution at intersections. Signals could become twisted and not visible to motorists. Power outages could also cause traffic signals not to function. Any intersection with traffic signals not functioning properly should be treated as an all-around stop.

Strong winds could also cause issues with debris on the roads including trees. Crews from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 3 area are prepared to respond to downed trees, powerlines, and any other type of debris that is blocking roadways.

Beginning Sunday into Monday a Winter Weather System may bring some snow and slick travel to the area. Temperatures are expected to reach single digits Sunday night. Motorists should be aware of possible hazardous driving conditions, but also bitterly cold temperatures. Motorists are encouraged to use slower speeds, leave plenty of space between vehicles, be cautious in braking, and keep updated on weather forecasts.

Anti-icing operations on roadways are set for Saturday. Crews are prepared to respond to any winter weather that is expected Sunday and Monday.

Travel maps, road conditions, and snow & ice status can be found on GoKY.ky.gov.
