New Businesses in Columbia in 2023 By Mayor Pamela Hoots in her Annual Review During the past year, we have seen two new retail centers built. They will hold eight to nine new businesses. We have new restaurants (and, more coming). Downtown Columbia is thriving (The Local Dwelling Company, Old Columbia, Flux Metals, and an expansion to Acapulco Grill on the square). We allocated a portion of our ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) $400,000 to local businesses for exterior improvements. Several of the local businesses use this money to make our community even more beautiful. Zaxby's has moved into the Walmart area on Burkesville Road; Happy Hawg is on Jamestown Street; Little Caeser's will be here next week; Kay's Cafe and Adair Spot opened on Jamestown Street; and other businesses have expanded. The City of Columbia has an ordinance that was updated a few years ago to provide a tax incentive to businesses that meet certain criteria. This year we have three businesses that have been approved for the property tax abatement. Columbia is open for business. We expect the growth trend to continue in 2024.
