Joanna Gilpin Rogers, 89, Columbia, KY (1933-2023)

Joanna Gilpin Rogers of Louisville, and formerly of Columbia, passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2023, at Summit Manor Nursing Home. She was 89 years old.

Funeral services will be held at 1pmCT on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, with Rev. Matthew Oakes and Rev. Richie Coomer officiating. Burial will follow in the Haven Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Wednesday after 10amCT at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.


She was born in Adair County on December 23, 1933, to the late Lawrence and Louella Hurt Gilpin. She was preceded in death by her husband Houston Rogers.

Mrs. Rogers was an active member of the Bethany United Methodist Church in Louisville, KY where she was a faithful member of the Prayer Team. Mrs. Rogers was a dedicated teacher and started her teaching career in a one room school at Sulphur Springs School Adair County. She taught in Jefferson County for many years and retired as a Reading Specialist at Layne Elementary. She enjoyed going to Riverside, The Farnesley-Moremen Landing Park to walk and exercise with friend. In her 80's she walked two 5Ks, The Indianapolis Mini Marathon and the Gobble Wobble in Lewisburg, TN, finishing first in her age group. She also enjoyed traveling, camping with her late husband Houston and spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include seven nieces and nephews Sue Coomer (Richie) of Columbia, KY, Lou Anne Coomer (Steve) of Columbia, KY, Phyllis Yaglowski (Carl) of Columbia, TN, Bridget Rowe (Freddie) of Columbia, KY, Dick Gilpin of Arizona, Ken Gilpin (Debra) of Kansas, and Suzette Gilpin of Louisville, KY and several great nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by six siblings Hurt, Otley, Alvis, Allen, and Hollis Gilpin and Lucy Breeding and her many beloved Pekingese, most recently "MeTu".

Pallbearers will be Neal Coomer, Landon Coomer, Derek Coomer, Chuck Rogers, Charles Breeding, and Tony Rodgers.
