Adair County unemployment rises to 5.5%, latest reporting period By Ed Waggener Figures derived from Kentucky Labor Force Estimates, preliminary November 2005 Adair Countys unemployment rate rose slightly in November 2005, the latest reporting period, to 5.5%. The rate is up from 5.1% in October 2005, and well up from the 4.0% jobless rate posted in November, 2004. Taylor County, apparently benefitting from Amazon's seasonal hiring more than other counties in the area, posted the Lake Cumberland Area Development District's best unemployment rate, with a 5.2% rate. Two other counties, Casey and Green, posted 5.5% rates, the same as Adair. The rankings for unemployment in the 10-county LCADD district area as follows: Unemployment rankings for September 2005 Ranking - County - Unemployment rate 1. Taylor County -5.2% 2. Adair County - 5.5% 2. Clinton County - 5.5% 2. Green County - 5.5% 5. Pulaski - 6.2% 6. Wayne -6.3% 7. Clinton- 6.5% 8. Russell - 7.1% 9. Cumberland - 8.4% 10. McQueary - 8.9% Neighboring Metcalfe County, in the Barren County Area Development District had an unemployment rate of 5.3%. Adair County's rate was below the statewide November 2005 figure of 5.9% unemployement. Nationwide, the November jobless rate was 4.8%. (Jan. 4, 2006) - Unemployment rates rose in 118 Kentuckycounties between November 2004 and November 2005 and fell in two counties,according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training in the EducationCabinet. In November 2005, one county had a jobless rate at or above 10percent compared to one county that recorded double-digit rates in November2004. . Woodford County's 4.2 percent jobless rate was the lowest in thecommonwealth. Other low rates were recorded in Webster County, 4.5 percent;Jessamine and Scott counties, 4.6 percent each; Fayette and Oldham counties,4.7 percent each; and Boone, Franklin, Madison and Warren counties, 4.8percent each. . Magoffin had highest unemployment rate, 11.4% Magoffin County recorded the state's highest unemployment rate - 11.4percent. It was followed by Wolfe County, 9.5 percent; Clay County, 9.4percent; Elliott, Leslie and McCreary counties, 8.9 percent each; RockcastleCounty, 8.8 percent; Fulton County, 8.7 percent; Graves, Harlan, Lewis andMorgan counties, 8.6 percent each. . Unemployment statistics are based on estimates and are compiled tomeasure trends rather than actually to count people working. Civilian laborforce statistics include non-military workers and unemployed Kentuckians whoare actively seeking work. They do not include unemployed Kentuckians whohave not looked for employment within the past four weeks.
