Allen Burress, Sr, Taylor County, KY (1935-2023)

Allen L. Burress, Sr. passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of October 31, 2023. He was born Allen Lee Burress to William Horace and Della Cave Burress of the Shiloh Community in Taylor County, Kentucky on August 28, 1935. He graduated from Taylor County High School, attended the University of Kentucky, obtained his degree in accounting from Western Kentucky University and was a Certified Public Accountant.

Allen grew up helping his father on the family farm. He developed his love of basketball in high school and acquired the nickname Spivey. Allen was drafted into the Army and served for 2 years in Germany. While in Europe, he played basketball for his division and enjoyed trips to Paris and London. Upon his return to the states he settled in Nashville, Tennessee and married Elizabeth Anne Hall in 1960.

Anne and he lived in Nashville for over ten years while having their three children, Allen Jr., John and Elizabeth. Allen worked for Peat, Marwick & Mitchell (now known as KPMG) while in Nashville. In the early 70s, they moved back to Campbellsville, Kentucky to be with their families. Allen established his own CPA firm and practiced for over 28 years. He taught his children his love of the outdoors through numerous camping and canoeing trips. Anne and he kept their boat in a slip at Emerald Isle Marina until Anne's stroke in 2004. Allen loved fishing on Green River Lake.

Allen held the record at one time for the largest muskie caught in Green River Lake. This fish adorned his office walls and the Taylor County Airport for many years. When not working or fishing, he loved watching the University of Kentucky basketball team play ball. Many a Saturday afternoon or evening was spent watching and yelling at the game with friends. Allen enjoyed traveling and playing bridge with Anne. Allen was extremely proud of his five grandchildren and enjoyed visiting with them whenever he could. Allen was a member of Bethel First Presbyterian Church, Campbellsville Country Club, the American Legion, and Lions Club. Later in life, he enjoyed spending the winters in Orange Beach, Alabama and eating oysters on the half shell.

Allen was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son Allen Lee Burress, Jr., two brothers, William "Billy" Burress and Dwight Cave, sister Madeline Morrison, brother-in-law Circuit Court Judge Mike Hall and sister-in-law Abby Hall Carter.

He is survived by a son, Dr. John W. Burress and his wife Dr. Vicki Modest of Boston, MA. A daughter, Elizabeth B. Bowden and her husband Jameson of Louisville, KY. He has five grandchildren, Emily Strickler (Travis) of Nashville, TN, Jessica, Ellie and Victoria Burress of Boston, MA and Alexander Hale of Fairfax, VA. Sisters-in-law, Lennie Hall of Campbellsville, KY and Cleo Burress of Mount Washington, KY. In addition, Allen has eight nephews and three nieces.

Visitation will begin Saturday, November 4, 2023, at Bethel First Presbyterian Church at 11am with service at 1pm and burial immediately following at Bethel First Cemetery. Parrott & Ramsey Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Bethel First Presbyterian Church, Bethal First Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund or Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery in his memory would be appreciated.
