CYRUS: Christmas 1944 fire destroyed Corner Drug Store

Found on the front page of the Adair County News, Wednesday, January 3, 1945.

During this era, the News wasn't published Christmas week, thus the delayed report.
Flames swept business block

Corner Drug Store, Roberts 5-10-25c Store and Adair Beauty Shop Destroyed. One of the most serious fires, which this town has suffered since the Bank of Columbia and two other buildings were destroyed in September, 1921, occurred early Christmas morning, when the Corner Drug Store and Roberts 5-10-25c Store were consumed by flames.

The alarm was sounded at four o'clock and the fire was well underway before the local fire department, a hose truck from Campbellsville and some volunteers from Russell Springs, could get the fire under control.

The Drug Store, formerly owned by Claude Lloyd, and located on the Public Square, had been recently purchased by Martin Rowe and was newly stocked. In this three story building there was also a beauty shop on the first floor fronting on Campbellsville Street, and owned by Mrs. Fanny Fields, of Edmonton, Ky., which was completely ruined. Apartments and office rooms on the third floor were badly damaged by smoke and water.

The Ten Cent Store, adjoining the corner building, had equally as great a loss. Mr. Roberts stated that not-with-standing the large Christmas trade, his store had a fine stock of merchandise, which was seriously damaged.

Mrs. W.I. Fraser, owner of both buildings, has estimated the loss to be approximately $50,000.
