Joe Edward Conover, 87, Columbia, KY native (1936-2023)

Joe Edward Conover of Russell Springs passed away on Monday, October 9, 2023, in Columbia, KY.

Funeral services will be held at 3pmCT on Thursday, October 12, 2023, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg St., Columbia, KY, with Bro. Jon Loy officiating. Burial will follow in the Freedom Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Thursday after 10amCT at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.


He was born on August 20, 1936, in Columbia, Ky to the late Rufus and Lillie Flatt Conover.

Mr. Conover was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working on his farm. He was a well-known businessman in Adair County and drove a Borders Milk truck for over 20 years before retiring. He owned Hillcrest Stables, where he and his family trained and enjoyed showing American Saddlebred horses. He owned and operated Hethron and Landtron Energy Corporation, where he drilled oil wells throughout Kentucky and Tennessee.

Survivors include a daughter Rhonda Conover of Columbia, KY; four grandchildren Heather Loy (Jon) of Russell Springs, KY, Seth Grider (Sheena) of Russell Springs, KY, Chad Grider (Denielle Howell) of Bardstown, KY, and Wayne Conover (Rayla) of Bluffton, SC; a daughter-in-law Denise McCloud Conover of Bluffton, SC; a brother Gene Conover of Columbia, KY; three great grandchildren Kassidi Taylor, Hunter Taylor, and Destiny Popplewell; two great great grandchildren and several other friends and relatives.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son Bruce Edward Conover and a brother Clyde Conover.

Pallbearers will be Seth Grider, Chad Grider, John Conover, Bryson Loy, Hunter Taylor, and Raysean Hughes.
