Remembering Ed: Civil Discourse By Shannon Sexton September 24th will mark the 5th anniversary of my good friend Ed's passing. I still find myself reaching for the phone to call him when breaking news or something controversial is afoot in the community. Ed and I happened upon each other during Mike Stephen's tenure as CJE. Mike introduced me to Ed and we became fast friends. Ed and I didn't always see things the same way but we were sure to have a civil discussion about the matter at hand. Conversation was always easy with Ed, even in disagreement. He was the best listener and would challenge me to see all aspects of a situation before locking down my opinion on a subject. Ed had an uncanny knack for taking even the smallest tidbit of news and creating a community involved discussion on Columbia Magazine. Those discussions would sometimes go on for days or even weeks. He knew just the right question to ask in order to get the community engaged. He also knew the right things to say to me when I wanted to think with my emotions instead of my brain. I still make a habit of slowing down to make sure emotions do not rule major decisions in my life. Anytime I hear someone say "Civil Discourse", I laugh a little and remember Ed. He sure was one-of-a-kind and I miss him. In the spirit of friendship and civil discourse, I remember and honor my friend Ed today. This story was posted on 2023-09-24 10:30:11
