BUSINESS NEWS: Robert Flowers is President of the Bank of Columbia

Business changes downtown this year include the promotion of Robert W. Flowers who was elected to the position of President of the Bank of Columbia by the Board of Directors and its parent holding company, Columbia Bancschares, Inc.

Flowers joined the Bank of Columbia in 1985 and since June, 1987, has served asits Chief Executive Officer. During his tenure, the bank has grown from $30 million inassets to $123 million.


Flowers succeeds Mrs. Wanda Hill, who has served as President and Chairman of the Boardof the Bank of Columbia since 1987. Mrs. Hill will remain as Chairman of the Board ofthe bank and vice president of Columbia Bancshares Holding Company.

He graduated first from Lindsey Wilson College and then from Western KentuckyUniversity, with a degree in accounting. He has attended the Kentucky Bank ManagementInstitute at WKU and Graduate Banking School at Louisiana State University. Robert andMikki Marshall Flowers have two children, Lynne Flowers Spencer of Bowling Green, andAnn Flowers attending Murray State University. Their grandchildren are Elizabeth andEmily Spencer in Bowling Green.

Flowers' long list of accomplishments and service includes:
  • Chairman of the Columbia Utilities Commission overseeing construction of the new wastetreatment plant and numerous water, sewer and gas enhancements

  • former member of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce

  • past chairman of the Columbia-Adair County Industrial Development Authority (servingwhile the new industrial park was acquired)

  • serves as treasurer of the Columbia Cemetery Association

  • former member of the Board of Directors of the Gradaute School of Banking of the Southat LSU

  • former member of the Board of Directors of the Kentucky Bankers Association

  • former Master of Columbia Lodge #96 (serving in that capacity for three terms), and hasserved as Degree Team Captain for 30 years.
Flowers is a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, member of Kosair Shrine, Louisville, and acharter member of the Mark Twain Shrine Club in Columbia. He has been a member of theColumbia Christian Church for 43 years, and has served there as both Sunday Schoolteacher and member of the choir.
