Shepperds explore Capital Reef National Park By April Shepperd Arches & Ancients Trip - it's another summer and we've just gotten back from another 16-day trek across the country to see amazing sights, experience this beautiful earth, and walk in the steps of those long gone. This year we adventured in eastern Utah and southern Colorado. Arches & Ancients Blog, Day 7 - Little Wild Horse Canyon and Capital Reef National Park! Little Wild Horse Canyon is a thrilling slot canyon with orange, red, and coral scalloped walls. With tight passages, curving walls, and sections of rock scrambling, this 3.6 mile-long canyon was a challenge. There was climbing, sliding, wall walking, and even some crawling. Not far away is Capital Reef. It's often overlooked because of its more famous neighbor, Arches National Park, but if you are out this way, don't miss it! The park preserves the Waterpocket Fold, a 100-mile long wrinkle in the earth's crust. The park gets its name from the white dome of Navajo sandstone that resembles the U.S. Capital Building.
