When Dale Smith filed Thursday of this week for the Republican nomination for Adair County Court Clerk in the May 16, 2006, primary election, the seventh primary contest was established, all on the Republican side of the ledger.

Mr. Smith will face Deputy Adair County Court Clerk Sheila Blair.

The other contested Republican Primaries are as follows:
  • To be the GOP's nominee for Adair County Judge Executive: Ann Melton, the current Adair County Court Clerk, was the first to file. Sammy Taylor, Grants Writer for the Adair County School District, has filed. And the race is will get more interesting if Joyce Reliford files, as expected, around December 13, 2005. Only one Democrat, Terry Farris, has filed for the his party's nomination.

  • To be the GOP nominee for Adair County Sheriff: It's a re-match of the 2002 race, when then-incumbent Sheriff Ralph Curry was narrowly beaten in the primary by Mendell Sexton. Both Curry and Sexton have filed, as has the Democrat who beat Sexton in the fall, current Adair County Sheriff Steve Cheatham. At the moment, Cheatham has no primary opposition.

  • To be the Republican nominee for Magistrate in District 2: Joe Kimbler, the party's nominee in 2002, has filed, as has Ted Turner. The incumbent and senior member of the court as well as current Judge Pro Tem, Democrat Wid Harris, has not yet filed. In fact, no Democrat has yet filed for Magistrate in District 2. Squire Harris is still choosing between running for re-election and staying put in what has been, for a long time, a safe seat.

  • In District 3, two candidates are entered in the Republican Primary. Donald "Buck" Campbell and Bill Spicer seek the GOP nomination for the seat now held by Democrat Tony Loy, who is, at present, his party's only candidate. This could change if Greg Willis enters the Democrat primary, or become even more interesting if Willis should set up a three-way fall race by running as an Independent.

  • To be the GOP nominee in District 5: Four candidates have filed for the seat now held by Billy Dean Coffey, who was appointed to fill out the term of Junior Brown; the others are Jackie D. Cravens, Jerry M. Smith, and Kenny Downey have also entered the Republican primary. Whoever wins will face a Democrat in the fall. Jeff Hatcher has entered the Democrat primary. Thus far he is unopposed.

  • To be the Republican nominee in Magisterial District 7, three Republicans have filed: Paul W. Turner, William Earl "Bill" Corbin, and Russell Holmes. Whoever wins will face a Democrat. Already, Democrat Wesley Taylor is in the race. The post is now held by Democrat Terry Farris, currently the lone Democratic candidate for Adair County Judge executive.
