Cyrus/ Gradyville news, December 10, 1941

The announcement of the Gradyville Get-Together on Sunday, December 11, inspired your humble Central Ohio Bureau Chief to bestir his winter-chilled stumps and peer with rheumy eyes into his crystal ball of the past to divine the news of that worthy place exactly 64 years ago this very day, as reported by the Bureau Chief of Greater Metropolitan Gradyville, Mrs. W.S. Baker.

Gradyville community news, as reported in the December 10, 1941 Adair County News.
The farmers have made good use of the tobacco seasons that have come this way it seems, as about all are through stripping and are now keeping busy hauling it to the markets. We are thankful the weed is bringing a good price this year and hope it continues throughout the season, as the farmers deserve good prices.

Mr. and Mrs. James Moss and little daughter, Nancy Ann, of Columbia, were last week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. C.O. Moss and on Sunday little Nancy Ann attended Sunday School here at the Methodist Church, where her grandfather is superintendent.

Hunters have ben quite busy the past few days and judge a number of quail have been killed.

Mr. and Mrs. Haskel Rodgers, of Columbia, have announced the arrival of a little son, William Allen, born November 27.

Mrs. Bob Rodgers and Mrs. Marvin Breeding, of Chicago, Ill., are here, the guests of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. B.B. Janes, and family and Mr. A.A. Dudley and family.

Mr. Evan Akin was a business caller at this place last Sunday.

I want to extend heart felt sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. D.C. Bryant and family, of Ella. I do not know you folks in person, but my thoughts, in pity, have been for you since I learned of this great tragedy. [On the night of Saturday, November 22, 1941, a house fire claimed the lives of Clifton and Chester Bryant, teenage sons of Mr. and Mrs D.C. Bryant.]

Mr. and Mrs. George Taylor Finn, of Mell, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. U.L. Rodgers and family last Sunday. Mr. Finn is a brother of Mrs. Rodgers.

By the way, the border-to-border screamer headline on the front page of this edition of the News was "U.S. Declares War on Japan."

Editor's note: In today's world, Gradyville is still the care-about-your-neighbors town it was in the 1940's. This afternoon, Sunday, December 11, 2005, there is a event which epitomizes the concept of community, when Frances and Daril Salyers host another Gradyville Christmas Get-Together. It's gotten so big, even Santa Claus comes. Thanks Cyrus, for reminding folks of this wonderful celebration. -ED
