G.R.A.W.L. members asks special care for pets in cold weather Give them a warm place to sleep. Increase their food. Don't let them get lost. Make sure they have I.D. By Katy Davis katy_norris@hotmail.com As a member of the Green River Animal Welfare League, I would like to remind everyone to take special care of their pets in cold weather. Make sure your pets have a warm place to sleep. If you cannot bring your dogs inside, give them a warm bed in the garage or if that is not possible, give them a warm dog house faced away from the wind with blankets or straw inside for them to snuggle down in. Put a thick blanket or towel over the door to keep the wind out. You may also purchase inexpensive sweaters for dogs to keep them warm. If your dog is sensitive to the cold due to age, illness or breed type, take him indoors for the season. Also, more dogs are lost during the winter than during any other season, so make sure they always wears ID tags and are kept away from the road where they can be hit and killed. Increase the amount of food given to outside dogs, particularly protein. Add some oil to their food for extra calories. Also, keep fresh water in their buckets. Bowls do not hold enough water and can be tipped over easily. Certainly dont allow them to be stuck outside with a frozen water dish. Check on this twice per day while youre already out feeding them. Other winter threats are coolants and antifreeze, which are lethal poisons for dogs and cats. Be sure to thoroughly clean up any spills from your vehicle. As for cats, it is a good idea to keep your cat inside. Outdoor cats can freeze, become lost or be stolen, injured or killed. Dont forget, give your outdoor pets lots of love and attention and leave them chew toys and things to entertain them when you cant be there to play with them in the yard. They get bored and lonely just like people. Dont forget to visit your veterinarian to keep your pet healthy and happy!
