184 Students Inducted into First ACHS Wall of Fame Principal Troy Young recognizes Inaugural Wall of Fame inductees; complete list of honorees follows; student body introduced to inspiration speaker Jim Richards by Pam Foust Listen to and work with your teachers and administrators. When you choose your life'swork, make sure you do it with honesty, integrity, enthusiasm and if you can do it witha smile on your face, that's really good. Enjoy it every day. By Linda Waggener linda@columbiamagazine.com Adair County High School Principal Michael D. Akin welcomed the crowd on Wednesday assembled to honor the students whose names were unveiled on the Wall of Fame for their high CTS scores. Hesaid, "To these 184 students, my challenge to you is to continue to strive forexcellence. To those students who didn't make it this time, challenge is to take thatextra step to insure your name is on the wall of fame next spring." Pamela Hurt Foust introduces Jim Richards Ms. Pamela Hurt Foust introduced the guest speaker Jim Richards. In her remarks she called him a friend of long standing since grade school, who is a 1954 grad of ACHS, and attended WKU on a baseball scholarship. She noted his coaching history which includes having been head coach at Western and also his having been recently inducted into the WKU Athletics Hall of Fame Member. She said that his full name is James Stevenson Richards while the program lists him as Jim, however, "to me, after all these years," Ms. Foust said, "he is still Jimmy." Richards shares life growing up at Garlin on Burton Ridge In his comments to the students, Mr. Richards shared a bit of his Adair Countyexperience. I grew up in Garlin on Burton Ridge Highway 206. In the days of my boyhood,I saw a lot of horse and buggies, there were no heaters in cars yet, unless youinstalled one, and there was no such thing as air conditioning. I attended Garlinone-room school. All 8 grades were in the same room except every other year we had thefifth and seventh, and every other year we had the sixth and eighth. My second year Iattended Lindsey Wilson Training School where our teachers were in training at Lindsey. We'd eat in the cafeteria so I learned to eat "college" cheese. Mother was a Math teacher and she also taught all the languages. On up Burton Ridge inKnifley, 1942, she was the boys' basketball coach and the principal. She earned bigmoney $100 a month. They cut her pay $20 a month though when the furnace went out.My Dad was a building contractor. I worked with him on many projects, including thePresident's home at Lindsey Wilson and many other buildings on campus. I grew up aroundpeople with a work ethic. I observed that it made a vast difference if you had a goodeducation. Member of first ACHS graduating class in 1954 I moved on to Columbia High and then became a member of the first graduating of the newAdair County High School (your old building). Electronic landmarks along the wayincluded getting a telephone my senior year in high school. The first time they told meI could see a television game was at the Adair County Fair and you know what I saw?Snow. I couldn't even tell there was a game on. We went to the State Tournament in 1954--went all the way to the final game only to loseby 2 points to Inez -- what a wonderful experience, first time in 40-some years Adairhad gone to State. We did the bunny hop around the square, y'all probably don't knowwhat the bunny hop was, but ask your grandparents about it and they'll tell you what agood time we had. You know what else was exciting? A meal they gave us at the old MillerHotel that sat on the square for the players and the cheerleaders. Just one more example of a student at ACHS. Classmate and I were taken into lunchroom and speaker said we're going to do this test today preparing for the ACT norms. I didn't understand it but she explained it to us. She asked for questions and Walter Baker stuck up his hand and said, "Yes ma'am, what it Imake a hundred on this test?" She said, "the test isn't such that you can make a hundredon it, you can make in the ninety-nineth percentile." Walter said, "what do I get if I score in the ninety-nineth percentile?"She said, "well, you can write yourself a scholarship to Harvard if you do that."He said, "I think I'll do that." There have been many changes in my life since those childhood experiences. Tells students changes will come in life There will be many changes in yours. Through school, I'd prepared to be a dentist until one day my Dad asked, "do you reallywant to be a dentist?" I said, "I'm all prepared with these special chemistry and physics classes I've takenalong the way." Dad said, "That's not what I asked, do you really want to be a dentist?" "No." I said, "I really wanta coach." "Then go coach," he said. "But I won't make any money." "Doesn't matter," he said, "you spend everything you make anyway." He said, "Be happy. Do what you wanta do in life." Won state basketball championship, coached at WKU I had a great career in coaching. I've been in the right places at the right rimes. Gotto win a state championship at Glasgow. Got to go to the final four at WKU. Last game Icoached, we were in the finals and got put out by a guy named Magic Johnson. What I really want to get down to is this, dream big! Shoot the moon, go for it.Whatever your best is, give it. Whatever you do, find a way to do what you really wantto do and be the best you can be. Along the way, find a spouse you can love and cherish. I've hung out with an AdairCounty girl for the last 46 years. Listen to and work with your teachers and administrators. When you choose your life'swork, make sure you do it with honesty, integrity, enthusiasm and if you can do it witha smile on your face, that's really good. Enjoy it every day.
