Forget 800 numbers, the first call for help can be local By Linda Waggener If you've been injured by someone else's actions, or discounted by social security or worker's comp, let your first call be a local one, to Helm Shearer Wilson (HSW) Attorneys in Jamestown - one of the only local personal injury firms in the Lake Cumberland area. While young attorneys often go into big city practices, Derrick G. Helm knew he would base his practice here before he ever left for college. As a student at Russell County High School he followed and worked with judicial legal servants like the Judge Jack Miller and Hon. Robert Bertram, longtime Russell county lawyers and leaders. It was here he remembers starting to feel a passion for helping local families. He said, "We treat our clients like the neighbors they are. We see our clients at grocery stores, churches and ballgames and are accountable to each of them long after their case is finished." The partners do not rush cases to a pre-litigation settlement for pennies on the dollar like the large groups who commonly advertise on television and consume most of the billboard space throughout the state. HSW has represented clients with claims ranging from just a few thousand dollars to multimillion dollar claims. From typical car wreck cases to complex multi-district litigation to nursing home negligence, they are able to assist any member of their community in prosecuting their claim when they have been injured. "I often tell people," he said, "that insurance companies are in business to do two things; collect premiums and deny claims. We are here to hold them accountable for our clients. In doing this, we prosecute claims for clients in both state and federal court." The four partners in the firm include Kevin Shearer, Gail Wilson and Derrick's partner and wife Terran Cross Helm who practiced law in Clinton County with her father, David M. Cross, before coming to Russell County. Derrick and Terran have two children, Giles and Marian. To learn more about their strengths and specialties, visit online at www.russellcountylaw.com or stop by their offices on the Public Square in Jamestown any day of the week.
