Kennedy's mother visited Columbia in 1960

Among the keepsakes at the Trabue Russell House in Columbia is the local newspaper with news of a major political event. Rose Kennedy, mother of then presidential candidate John F. Kennedy, brought his national campaign to Adair County on September 34, 1960 for a tea at Hughes Motel.

Hosted by local Democratic women, the regional event saw almost 1,000 women meet the future President's mother.

Despite the success of the tea, Kennedy lost the county and state, but won the country.

Details of this event are described in the book Wellsprings, by Adair County author Janice Holt Giles.

Some in the receiving line greeting guests arriving to meet Mrs. Kennedy were: Mrs. Wilson Wyatt, Mrs. J. Murray Blue, State Democratic Chairwoman, Mrs. Janice Holt Giles, Knifley, State Democratic Regional Chairwoman, Mrs. B, J. Bolin, Adair County Democratic Chairwoman, Mrs. Otha Willis, Adair County Democratic Campaign Chairwoman, and Miss Christine Johnson, sister of Democratic Senatorial nominee Keen Johnson.

Mrs. Kennedy spoke briefly on several occasions to different groups of the visitors Sunday afternoon at the tea. A total of 20 counties were represented at the affair and Mrs. Giles estimated 780 to 1,000 persons filed the receiving line meet the future US President's mother.
