Gladys Roy, 99, Columbia, KY (1923-2023)

Gladys Dora Hancock Roy of Columbia passed away on Friday, June 16, 2023, at T. J. Health Columbia. She was 99 years old.

Funeral services will be held at 4pmCT on Monday, June 19, 2023, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg St., Columbia, KY, with Rev. Bill Davenport and Wes Irvin officiating. Burial will follow in the Haven Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Sunday from 2pmCT until 8pmCT, and will continue Monday until the time for the service at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.


She was born in Wayne County, KY on November 27, 1923, to the late Mack Merton and Florence Dishmon Hancock. She was preceded in death by her husband William Thomas Roy.

Mrs. Roy was a member of Trinity Church and attended Bearwallow Church, she also taught Sunday School and was an active member of the Retired Teachers Association. She had taught from the age of 19 in a one room school in Wayne County until retiring from the Adair County School System after nearly 70 years in the classroom. She enjoyed gardening, feeding the birds and spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include four children Fay Davidson, Mike Roy (Teresa), and Dale Roy (Lana) all of Columbia, KY, and Camellia Roy of Stanford, KY; ten grandchildren Andrew Roy (Ashley), Alisha Roy Stotts (Jason), Thomas Reed, Miranda Mann, Robert Mann (Britney), Adam Roy (Courtney), Ricky Roy (Tressie), Amy Keys (Bobby), Wayne Roy, and Kevin Roy; sixteen great grandchildren Ashley Back, Lauren Smart, Lindsey Sweazy, Addaline Reed, Kassi Huddleston, Riley Roy, Hunter Cundiff, Brady Cundiff, Brayden Burton, Caydee Burton, Tristen Stotts, Carson Roy, Brody Roy, Abby Maulden, Blake Maulden, and Colton Mann; a great great granddaughter Ada Huddleston; and several nieces, nephews, friends, and other relatives.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a son William Thomas Roy, Jr., and thirteen siblings Fred, Guy, Carl, Earl, Cosby, Glenna, and Bessie Hancock, Lois Piercy, Hazel Fulton, Eva Jones, Chris Neat, Bonnie Claywell, and Doris Watson.

Pallbearers will be Ricky Roy, Thomas Reed, Adam Roy, Andrew Roy, Robert Mann, and Jason Stotts. Honorary pallbearers will be Amy Keys, Alisha Stotts, Miranda Mann, Kenneth Davidson, and Ralph Jones.
