Poetry by Robert Stone: Cats have plans

Cats have plans: A birthday sonnet for Christopher Wendell Comperry
By Robert Stone, 29 May 2023

While you may think you choose what cat is yours,
if you are honest you will soon observe
that you do not decide what bond endures,
that cats have plans from which they do not swerve.

You can no longer claim you own your things,
you will soon find yourself at beck and call
of majesty demanding all that clings
about you from when you were not in thrall.

You put out food but must remember well
old food will never do, there must be fresh,
and if you think you need to rest a spell,
do not propose to pledge a pound of flesh.

Your cat keeps track of what you say and do
and if you disagree, you cannot sue.
