LOCAL HISTORY: Does anyone have information on WPA murals here?

Dr. Jimmy Emerson, Dalton, GA, wants more information on Orville Carroll mural which was painted "down in Columbia," during the 1930s or 1940s.
Sue Stivers received the letter below inquiring about a WPA mural which may have been painted on a post office or other public building in Columbia in the 1930's-1940's.

We contacted the writer, Dr. Jimmy S. Emerson, in Dalton, GA, and he agreed that we could post his query at ColumbiaMagazine.com. His only tie to Columbia, he says, is that he used to have relatives in Campbellsville, and visited there.

Hi,

I ran across a Smithsonian Institute interview from 1966 on the internet. It was with a lady from Louisville named Adele Brandeis. She was somehow involved with the WPA art project in KY during the 30's-40's. In this article, she mentions that Orville Carroll painted a mural "down in Columbia". Generally these murals were painted in PO's.

I have spoken with someone at the Columbia post office and he said that there was never a mural in the old PO as far as he knew. Do ya'll know of a mural anywhere in Columbia that might be the one mentioned in the interview? Is there another business in the old PO that I might be able to contact? Is the high school, library, etc from the 1930-40's era? There may not be a mural, but seems that if it were not painted, the lady would have known about it 30 years later.

EDITOR'S NOTE: I believe that the Post Office in those years was in the building which now houses Wid Harris' Barber Shop and Mouser Realty & Auction Service. That was before it was housed next to what is now Barger Insurance on the lot now occupied by the Adair County Courthouse Annex.

I can't remember a mural on either building. Can anyone else? And, if not there, where would the Orville Carroll WPA mural have been?

Any information can be forwarded to:

or leave with Sue Stivers at the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce, email to: coladair@alltel.net
Scott Campbell writes September 7, 2012:
I realize that this is 7 years later, but in case you are still wanting information on your article posted here: LOCAL HISTORY: Does anyone have information on WPA murals here?
