2005 Adair County Primary Election: Russell Holmes latest to file Mr. Holmes will face Paul Wayne Turner, William "Bill" Corbin in Republican primary for Magistrate in 7th District; lone Democrat seeking that seat now has no opposition. Complete list of candidates link below, shows that county's largest minority demographic continues to dominate filings By Ed Waggener ed@columbiamagazine.com The cast just grew by one more in the epic 2006 Adair County Primary election, as Columbia businessman Russell Holmes added his name to the list of Republicans seeking the party's nomination in Adair County's 7th Magisterial District. Mr. Holmes filed just before the 4:30 p.m. closing of County Court Clerk Ann Melton's office, on Monday, November 28, 2005. He now faces Paul Wayne Turner and William "Bill" Corbin in the Republican primary. Mr. Turner is a Columbia businessman, in the commercial rental property business and storage building rental business. He is a registered nurse and was one of the primary promoters of the Nickel Tax Recall Petition. Mr. Corbin operates a hauling and excavating business and is very active in the Adair County Rescue Squad. He often acts as a spokesman for that group. Mr. Holmes filing papers included the signature of former Seventh District Magistrate Russell Guy Perkins. Previous speculation had been that Mr. Perkins would run to reclaim the seat for himself. Mr. Farris won the seat by defeating Mr. Perkins while Mr. Perkins was the incumbent. The seat is now held by Democrat Terry Farris, who is vacating the office to run for County Judge Executive. He remained his party's only candidate for County Judge-Executive, at the close of business in the county court clerk's office on November 28, 2005. One Democrat has filed to succeed fellow Democrat Farris. He is Wesley Taylor, a Columbia businessman, and who has spoken publicly in Fiscal Court on more than one occasions. County's largest minority demographic continues to dominate filings The county's largest minority demographic, males--in this case, white men--continues to dominate the filings for public offices in Adair County. Adair County has slightly more women than men and Adair County voter registration has more women than men. So far, there hasn't been a single woman file for a seat on the Adair County Fiscal Court, which, in its history, has seen at least two women Magistrates: Bertha Radford, who was magistrate in District 3, and Treva Downey Ballou, who served in District 5. The five-member Columbia City Council has one woman council person, June Parsons, and the Adair County School Board has one woman among five members, Marsha Walker. Among the major county offices, women are much more representative, with two incumbents: County Attorney Jennifer Hutchison-Corbin and Ann Melton, County Court Clerk. For major county offices, three women have already filed: Jennifer Hutchison Corbin for re-election, Sheila Watson for County Court Clerk, and Ann Melton for County Judge Executive. That number is expected to grow with the addition of Joyce Reliford in the County Judge's race, anticipated December 13 or shortly thereafter. In the race for District Judge, a non partisan race, the gender balance is exactly even, with Columbia attorneys Mike Loy and Judy Vance now filed for the seat being left vacant by Judge Roger Elliott.
