Phillip Coffey - Soul of a Borrowed Mule

Soul of a Borrowed Mule - By Phillip Coffey

Soul of a borrowed mule always in much demand.
Pulling a three point 'Rastus' plow across a foreign field.
Leaving a furrow behind him in a previously untilled bottom.
Leather hide, only scraps for his evening meal.

Crops sowed but not for this lent beast.
Pulling and tugging, composed in his quiet demeanor.
Among all of us he must be the very least.
Used him up quickly, sent off to greener pasture.

Soon meets Saint Peter at the Golden Polished Pearly Gate.
Cephas said, ”Been watching you closely with all of your much labor(s).”
“Have given your all - without anyone ever even asking” - never receiving.”
“Enter in, sainted soul – It is all yours to rejoice, forever - for the taking.”
