COLUMBIA, KY. (November 21, 2005)-- An intramural flag football team from Lindsey Wilson College won the 4th-annual American Collegiate Intramural Sports Flag Football 4th Annual "Battle of the Bluegrass" Regional Tournament, held last weekend in Bowling Green, KY.

Lindsey Wilson's The Boys of Summer intramural flag football team beat Indiana State University, 26-20, in the championship game, held Sunday afternoon at Hattie L. Preston Intramural Sports Complex at Western Kentucky University.

The LWC team also received a grade of "A+" for sportsmanship, and two players received individual honors: Jared Barnes, a biology senior from Franklin, Tenn., was named to the all-tournament team and Nick Phelps, a business management junior from Hartford, Ky., was named the tournament's most valuable player.

Lindsey Wilson was the only member of the NAIA represented in the tournament, hosted by WKU. A total of 11 NCAA-Division 1 and NCAA-Division 2 schools brought a total of 20 men's flag football teams to the tournament.

After an opening-round loss to the University of Kentucky in the double-elimination pool, the LWC team beat Youngstown (Ohio) State, Bellarmine (Ky.) University, West Virginia University, Western Kentucky University and then Indiana State University in a single-elimination bracket.

This was the first year LWC participated in the tournament.

LWC Intramural Sports Director Nate Harlan said the team exceeded expectations.

Now Lindsey Wilson is the team to beat

"After their first lost to the University of Kentucky, the team really stepped up to the challenge before them and became a Cinderella team," Harlan said. "Now we're the team to beat. The Boys of Summer represented Lindsey Wilson College well by showing fight and determination."

And it was no small accomplishment for LWC to win the tournament.

"The fact that a NAIA college won the tournament is unusual because not a lot of smaller schools participate in the tournament," said Derek Hottel, WKU sports clubs coordinator. "In fact, no team from a school as small as Lindsey Wilson College has ever won the tournament. It's very impressive."

The Boys of Summer advance to the 2005 ACIS Flag Football Nationals, hosted by West Florida University on December 29-31 in Pensacola, FL.

WKU will pay the team's $400 entry fee and donate a travel stipend of $1,000.The Boys of Summer includes eight LWC baseball players and one former basketball player. Along with Barnes and Phelps, the team includes: Teddy Dahlman, Braidy Vance, Mike Staten, Kerry Gorley, Matt Johnson, Bryan Gitlewski and Adam Hensley.
