ELECTION 2006: Nickel Tax absentee voting is very light

Voting house will be in Gradyville this morning. Independent candidacy deadlines detailed; potentential candidates have until December 31, 2005, to register as Independent if they wish to run in 06 General Election as Independent
Absentee voting on the Nickel Tax by machine is underway in the office of County Court Clerk Ann Melton. As of mid-day Monday, November 21, only 10 people had voted. "Interest is low," Mrs. Melton said. "in most elections, there would have been 100 votes by now."

Interest in absentee paper ballots is not too keen, either. So far, the county court clerk's office has received only about 25 requests to vote by mail in the December 6, 2005.

The December 6, 2005, ballot is the shortest anyone can remember. There's should be very short waits, as the Nickel Tax question is the only one on the ballot.

Voting house will be here at 10:00 a.m.Word from the builder, through the County Court Clerk's office, is that the new voting house will arrive at Gradyville at approximately 10:00 a.m. this morning, Tuesday, November 22, 2005.

The building will be positioned next to the parking lot of D&F Grocery.

Independent filing deadlines updated

Mrs. Melton researched the deadlines for those who might wish to run as independent candidates in the Fall 2006 elections, and found the following:
  1. Those not registered as Independents have until December 31, 2005, to change their affiliation to Independent (KRS.118.315 Section 1).
  2. On April 3, 2006, those who intend to run as Independents would have to file a Statemetn of Candidacy in the County Clerk's office for local races, or in the Secretary of State's office for other races.

  3. The actual filing deadline would be the same as for the school board and City of Columbia offices, in early August.
