CYRUS: Six room house in Columbia sold for $4,835 in 1944 What a deal! The following quarter-page ad appeared in the November 22, 1944 edition of the Adair County News. ABSOLUTE AUCTION FRIDAY, NOV. 24 At 11:00 A.M. Rain or Shine. This is one of Columbia's most desirable residential properties offered at auction in many a day. DESCRIPTION The nice six room residence, in a select neighborhood, has screened porches, front and back, city water in house, electricity, newly papered and painted inside. Garage, woodshed, smoke house, chicken house, and a nice small barn. About four acres of land, good garden, barn lot and cow lot with good spring. POSSESSION GIVEN AT ONCE A WORD TO THE PUBLIC Mrs. Dudley is now making her home in Gradyville and has put this property in my hands to sell at high dollar. If you are interested in a home in Columbia, look this property over before day of sale. Bob Wolford, Auctioneer. For further information see or write Elbert Hill, Agent Columbia, Kentucky A brief follow-up article in the November 29th edition headlined "Edgar Smith Buys Dudley Residence" gave the sale details: "Mrs. A. A. Dudley's residence and land on Greensburg Street was sold Friday by Elbert Hill to Edgar Smith for $4,835. Possession will be given at once." According to my favorite inflation calculator, $4,835 in 1944 would equal slightly over $51,000 today -- what a deal for a four acre town lot and a six room house with modern conveniences!
