Carol Perkins: Happy Birthday, Willie

Previous Column: Sunflower seeds

By Carol Perkins

I've been listening to Willie Nelson lately. Although his music never gets old, like the rest of us, he is heading up the ladder. His 90th birthday is April 29, 2023, and the Hollywood Bowl is hosting a two-day star-studded celebration. I sure wish I could be there!

When my friends and I were concertgoers, we saw Willie several times. Some of those times he was lucid and stayed with the music. Other times, he was never with the music or on key. No one seemed to mind because Willie was Willie. One memorable moment was a New Year's Eve when Guy and I were at Bridgestone for a Toby Keith concert.

Out strolls Willie while Toby was in the middle of the song about never smoking pot with him again. Willie joins in the chorus and the crowd goes wild. At the end, he placed his guitar "Trigger" on a stand and staggered away. The crowd gasped as the guitar (estimated worth $900,000) leaned off the stand and was inches from hitting the floor. A band member caught it and Willie never noticed.

Years before that, he played at Tombstone Junction, and off we went - Runell Clemmons, his biggest fan, Kathy Gail Sanders, Judy Wallace Irvin, and I. After the show, he stood behind a table, signed autographs, and kissed every woman who wanted a kiss. Who wouldn't want to be kissed by Willie? (I can think of a few.) He signed my canvas purse and my Ked tennis shoe, which are safely stored with my Engelbert scarf. We also loved his harmonica player, Mickie, so we had pictures with him. Even though we tried, we never got on the Honeysuckle Rose. Following Willie was so much fun!

There are a few singers (and very few) whose voices are instantly recognizable, and who write lyrics and the music to go with it, perform, and can still fill an arena. Very few are still "On the Road Again." It would be fun to get back on the road and follow Willie one more time. Happy Birthday, Willie!
