KY Mesonet: Remembering the April 1971 tornado outbreak

Shane Holinde, Outreach Manager with the KY Mesonet and Climate Center, has posted an in-depth look at the severe weather outbreak of April 27, 1971, at www.kyclimate.org:

"On that afternoon, numerous supercells erupted over western and southern portions of Kentucky. Several storms turned tornadic." As he recounts, "The storms only seemed to grow more intense as the night wore on. Green, Adair, and Russell Counties bore the brunt of two massive tornadoes that were responsible for great deal of destruction."

There's lots of information about the storms, maps of storm paths, and information about the special challenges forecasters had with the limited information provided by 1970s-era technology.
