23 CANDIDATES have filed for Adair County Offices: An overview

Races are already getting interesting, with everything from the Brothers Turner seeking Magisterial posts in two districts to a repeat cast from 2001 in the Sheriff's race, and it's just November 18, 2005. There's gender imbalance, but Republican women are doing their part.

Twenty-three candidates have filed for Adair County offices through Friday, November 18, 2005, according to Adair County Clerk Ann Melton.

So far, 19 Republicans and 4 Democrats have filed. Four women, all Republicans, and 19 men, 4 Democrats and 19 Republicans, have filed.

The latest to file is Ted Turner, who has filed for the Republican nomination for Magisrate, District 2. The seat is now held by Democrat Magistrate Wid Harris, who is a still weighing a run for judge executive. Ted Turner is the brother of Paul W. Turner, who lives in District 7, and who has filed for the Republican nomination for Magistrate there. So far as is known, if elected, the Brothers Turner would be the first siblings ever to sit as Magistrates on the Adair County Fiscal Court at the same time. Paul W. Turner faces opposition in the Republican primary from William "Bill" Corbin. One Democrat, Wesley Taylor, has filed for the office. The incumbent, Terry Farris, is at the moment the only Democrat to enter the County Judge's Race.

In county-wide races, it stands like this:
  • The county judge executive office now has three candidates. Besides the single candidate in the Democratic primary, Terry Farris, two Republicans now have filed for the opportunity to carry their party's badge. The first to file was Ann Melton, Adair County Court Clerk; and Sammy Taylor, Grants Writer for the Adair County School System. Joyce Reliford will file for the Republican nomination, as well. On the Democratic side, several others are often mentioned, including previously mentioned, above, Wid Harris, and District 4 Magistrate J.M. Shelley, the party's standard bearer in the last two elections, Carl Arnold, and former Judge Richard Lee Walker. Judge Walker has toyed with the idea of running as an independent, which carries only one deadline: He'd have to switch from Democrat to independent by December 31, 2005. "Everyone knows I'm a Democrat," he said. "It would just be a technicality, and county politics are, for the most part, non-partisan," he said. Carl Arnold narrowly lost his two races against the popular incumbent, Jerry Vaughan.

  • The race for Adair County Sheriff is shaping up as a re-run of the 2001 race. Republicans Mendell Sexton and former Adair County Sheriff Ralph Curry have both filed, as has Democrat Steve Cheatham. Last time around, Mendell Sexton beat the incumbent Ralph Curry. Some feel the bitter primary set up Democrat Steve Cheatham's victory in the fall.

  • Only one person has filed for the Adair County Court Clerk's office. She's Republican Sheila Blair, who is currently Deputy Clerk.

  • There's no opposition for Jennifer Hutchison-Corbin, the incumbent Adair County Attorney, either. She has already filed for the Repulican nomination for the office.

  • And there can be no opposition for the Adair County PVA office now held by William Matt "Junior" Feese. The deadline has passed to take the test, with no one attempting it. PVA Feese has not yet filed, but it is felt certain he will do so.

  • But the only other office for which a test is required, that of Circuit Court Clerk, may have a mystery candidate. Word in town is that at least one other person may be taking the test for the office, now held by Democrat Dennis Loy, who is seeking re-election but has not yet filed.

  • Incumbent Jailer William "Bug" Knight has filed in the Republican Primary for re-election. Mr. Knight says he expects opposition, but thus far, no one has filed.

  • No one has yet filed for County Coroner, a post now held by Democrat Rick Wilson.

  • Finally, no one has yet filed to oppose Republican Mike McKinney for County Surveyor

Two school board Districts on the ballot in 2006

They have until the August filing deadline, and nobody has yet filed, but the offices of Member of the Adair County Board of Education will be on the November ballot. Board of Education District 1, now represented by Greg Willis, will be open, as will District 3, now held by Chris Watts. Mr. Watts is still weighing the race.

No one has filed for Mayor, City Council

Though they can file now, no one has become a candidate for any of the City of Columbia offices. The Mayor and all City Council seats will be on the ballot. The present Mayor, Pat Bell, is considered an impressively strong candidate should he choose to seek re-election. He's not yet saying for sure he'll run. The six incumbents are Larry Marshall, Joe Moore, Charles Grimsley, Craig Dean, Edwin Taylor, and June Parsons.

Filings for county elections will continue through January 31, 2006, for those entering party primaries. For independents, City of Columbia offices, and Adair County School Board, there is an August 2006 deadline.

Filings for these offices are made at the office of Adair County Court Clerk Ann Melton in the Adair County Courthouse Annex. The office is open from 8-4:30 Mondays through Fridays, and from 8:30 to Noon on Saturdays. The phone number is 270-384-2801. The email for the clerk is: adaircc2000@yahoo.com.
